Ventolin is commonly prescribed as an aerosol inhalant administered through an inhaler. For most individuals, two inhalations should be taken every four to six hours. This usually comes out to about two inhalations four times a day. More frequent inhalations are not recommended.

To prevent exercise-induced bronchospasms, it is recommended that you take two inhalations of Ventolin fifteen minutes before physical activity.

The exact dosage and schedule will vary depending on the patient's age, body weight, and severity of the condition. Take the medication exactly as your doctor has instructed.

Do not increase your dosage or discontinue the use of Ventolin unless ordered to do so by your doctor. If you experience any adverse reactions, contact a health care provider. Your dosage may increase or decrease depending on your doctor’s orders.

Warnings:It is not intended as a mood stabilizer, and should only be taken under strict medical supervision. Make sure you understand and give proper medical attention if you have any unusual symptoms such as chest pain, irregular heartbeat, uncontrolled shaking, nausea, irregular bleeding, sudden vision or hearing loss, hearing decrease, muscle atrophy, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, yellowing of the skin or eyes, sweating, blurred vision, trouble sleeping.

Do NOT take:

If you are allergic to salbutamol or any of the other ingredients of this medication.

Muscle cramps

If you are pregnant, might become pregnant, or think you may be pregnant or breast-feeding or planning to breast-feed. Also, if you are planning any changes in your health, please consult your doctor before use.

Ringing in the ears

If you are having fits or throwing up, stop and seek immediate medical attention. A fits and bleeding are very unlikely to occur in the first few hours after taking Ventolin. If you have a stomach ulcer or bleeding disorder, stop using and call your doctor at once if you experience this when you first start taking Ventolin.

This medication may cause dizziness, and you should avoid driving until you know how you react to it. If you experience these or any changes in your vision, stop taking Ventolin and see your doctor immediately. Also, if you develop other side effects such as weakness, numbness, tingling, or weakness in one or both legs, sudden worsening of diabetes or high blood pressure, call your doctor immediately or get medical help if you experience these or any of the other possible side effects from taking Ventolin.

If you experience these or other changes in your vision from taking Ventolin, stop using this medication and call your doctor.

If you experience swelling of the ankles or legs, particularly in the lower back, this may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. Stop using this medication and get medical help right away or get medical help if you experience any of the following symptoms: tingling, stiffness, or muscle pain in one or both legs, sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting.

Indications/Uses

Salbutamol (Ventolin) is a bronchodilating medication used in the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other respiratory inflammatory diseases, as an adjunct to prescribed bronchodilator therapy. It belongs to the inhaled bronchodilators drug class and is primarily used to manage short-term symptoms associated with COPD (i.e. cough, difficulty breathing, wheezing, shortness of breath).

Dosage/Direction for Use

Salbutamol (Ventolin) is applicable to:

  • LLOW-up in individuals at high risk of severe exacerbations for whom rescue therapy was inadequate; or
  • LLOW-up in the management of COPD and bronchospasm (i.e. bronchodilator therapy) associated bronchospasm (see Precautions and Precautions section); and
  • LLOW-up in the management of COPD and severe COPD associated with bronchitis (i.e. bronchospasm).

Active Ingredient

The following active ingredients are believed to be active in Salbutamol (Ventolin):

  • Salbutamol sulfateand:Diamicron’s is an aqueous dispersion of an oleic glycerine gel that contains salbutamol sulfate, which is stable in the human body and is well absorbed following oral administration. The following inactive ingredients are believed to be inactive in the tablet formulation of Salbutamol (Ventolin):

Salbutamol (Ventolin) is applicable to be taken in accordance with the following schedules:

  • Adults:Follow the prescribed schedule as follows:
  • Children 12 years and older:Take 1 capsule every 12 hours (5 mg to 10 mg) and no more than 4 hours before anticipated development of asthma or wheezing.
  • Individuals 12 years and older:Take 1 capsule every 8 hours (5 mg to 10 mg) and no more than 4 hours before anticipated development of asthma or wheezing.
  • If an individual 12 years and older develops asthma or wheezing after taking Salbutamol (Ventolin) for more than 4 hours, or if a child 12 years and older develops asthma after more than 10 hours, take the individual’s dose at the earliest opportunity for appropriate treatment.

Treatment should be continued for a minimum of 6 months (i.e. the duration of which is 6 x 1 capsule salbutamol, 1 capsule twice daily, of a bronchodilator).

Warnings/Precautions

Salbutamol (Ventolin) should be used with caution in individuals who are at risk of severe bronchospasm (see Precautions section). Individuals with a history of cardiovascular diseases, pre-existing lung conditions, or those taking medicines that reduce the efficacy of bronchodilators, e.g. beta-blockers (e.g. doxazosin), should be counseled against exposure.

Additionally, Salbutamol (Ventolin) should be used with caution in the following groups of individuals:

  • Individuals with a history of cardiovascular diseases, e.g. pre-existing lung conditions, or those taking medicines that reduce bronchodilation:Symptoms such as wheezing, chest tightness, chest discomfort, coughing, chest pain, difficulty breathing, and shortness of breath may include sudden wheezing, chest tightness, and coughing.

Ventolin HFA 100mcg Steroid Injection is a non-greasy, easy to use inhaler designed for injection on the skin. The correct amount of salbutamol to use is measured on the expiry date printed on the pack. The correct dose is dependent on the dose and your age and weight. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not use two doses at once.
